When you shared the folder - did you see any leftover ownership rights? I've had to delete them for sharing to work. I'm not sure what you mean by that? A bit later I noticed shares for the media center not working. I just checked my registry and 'AllowInsecureGuestAuth' is set to 1 for me. I have various shares on my internal network that I don't mind giving anonymous access to so I turned off my password protected sharing. I found this helped in my instance. Or was it a service pack update that brought Win7 to this standard after the fact?

Generally, unless you are on a secure connection or a completely untrusted network, you should always set a password for your Administrator. It is just best practice anyway.

I've had no trouble with my SMB shares on Windows 10 until very recently, and suspect that an OS update a couple days back caused SMB sharing to persistently fail keeps asking for the username and password.
