As the years have gone by, I have used many file sharing programs. Everything from Napster to Morpheus, Warez, Kazaa, Bearshare, to Limewire has been on my computer at one point or another. Eventually the government steps in and shuts these networks down. Ares was different though. It was open source, meaning it is a project that many programmers have contributed to and it is distrubuted free of charge.
While other companies came and went, Ares stood strong, for like 5 or 6 years. I got off limewire years ago and i am still surprised that people use it with any good results. The problem with Ares, in my opinion anyways, is that computing has changed but Ares hasnt been updated accordingly. You see, when Ares came out, there were a few things in common. Not everyone had high-speed internet at the time but that wasnt the thing anyways, the commonality is that almost everyone had only one computer and if they happened to have high speed interent, then they were most likely wired to the cable modem.
When ares first came out, wireless internet connections were not really in any homes at the time. Now however, almost everyone that has a high-speed internet connection and also probably has more than one computer and a wireless connection as well. Now it may sound simple enough, I mean, there are even sites that walk you through it.
But its not. The problem is that it only works sometimes. I have done the proceedure over 15 times on different computers and i have only have limited success. I occassionally fix freinds and relatives computers and i used to reccommend Ares to them, but if i can only make it work sometimes, then they will never figure it out on their own.
I had finally gotten it to work on one computer or mine, then about 6 months later i reinstalled windows xp on it and did the same exact install procedure with ares, and this time, it wouldnt work at all, so Ares is officially useless….
